Yes, provided the appliance is DEFRA exempt. Under the Clean Air Act most towns and cities are smoke control areas, where you may only burn smokeless fuel — or burn wood in an appliance DEFRA has exempted. Every exempt stove we sell is marked with a green DEFRA badge on its product page. Burning wood in a non-exempt stove in one of these areas can carry a penalty from your local authority.

As a rough guide, measure the room in metres, multiply length × width × height and divide by 14. A 5m × 4m room with a 2.4m ceiling gives about 3.4kW. Most British living rooms land between 4kW and 6kW. Oversizing is the common mistake: a stove run too cool tars up the flue and blackens the glass. Well-insulated or new-build homes should size down; a draughty solid-wall cottage should size up.

You appoint your own installer — we are a supplier and do not fit fires or arrange fitting. Document J of the Building Regulations covers combustion appliances and flues: hearth construction, distances to combustibles, flue sizing, ventilation and the carbon monoxide alarm. The work must be signed off. A registered installer (HETAS or equivalent) can self-certify and issue a certificate; otherwise you must notify building control before work starts and pay for an inspection. Gas appliances must by law be fitted by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

A conventional flue fire uses your existing chimney to carry fumes away and draws combustion air from the room. A balanced flue fire is a sealed unit behind glass: a twin-wall pipe through an external wall brings air in and takes fumes out, so no chimney is needed and no heat is lost up one. Balanced flue models are typically 80–90% efficient against roughly 50–70% for a conventional flue fire, and they cannot be affected by draughts in the room.

Yes. Three routes: a balanced flue gas fire through an external wall; a bioethanol fire, which needs no flue at all, only room ventilation; or a wood burner with a twin-wall insulated flue system built up the outside or through the roof — that is a proper construction job but entirely normal, and it is how most extensions and garden rooms get a stove.

Since January 2022 every new solid fuel stove sold in the UK must meet Ecodesign limits on particulate emissions, carbon monoxide and minimum efficiency. In practice it means cleaner burning, tighter air control and around 80% or better efficiency. Every stove on this site is Ecodesign compliant. It is a separate standard from DEFRA exemption — an Ecodesign stove is not automatically exempt for a smoke control area, so check both marks.

The Scottish Highlands, islands, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man run on a longer schedule with any surcharge quoted at checkout. Check your access and doorways before you order: once the pallet is off the vehicle it is yours to move.

Everything we sell is new, genuine UK stock and carries its manufacturer's warranty — commonly 5 to 10 years on the stove body, which you register with the manufacturer after installation. Wearing parts such as rope seals, glass, baffles and grates are consumables and are not covered, but we can supply them for the models we stock.
